This book explains the foundations of the language by addressing sentence structure in much the same way we used to dissect sentences in high school. It enables one to clearly understand what he's saying and why from the point of "when". He then builds the student's vocabulary and teaches how to conjugate verbs and adjectives, which is also easily understood via the the author's simple, formulaic approach. The result is that the reader gets a strong grasp on the language from day one. Also, the author is Nissei, a second generation Japanese American whose first language is English. Because of this he understands and even anticipates what the English speaking person will find difficult and always addresses it up front. In this way, he completely demystifies the language and makes it extremely easy to understand and speak. Consequently, my command of the language is better than my son's who minored in Japanese in College. Note, however, the book is all Romanji, which is excellent for those who wish to be able to speak but not read or write.
