It took daring to publish John Beecher's poetry, for this descendant of Harriet Beecher Stow was a powerful voice against injustice, racism, and sheer stupidity. He was punished for refusing to sigh a "loyalty oath" because he felt it was unconstitutional. It took nine years for the courts to agree that he was right. TIME magazine said it:"Beecher is a product and a proponent of the great unfinished American Revolution."
His "Report to the Stockholders" spoke truth to power and should be part of the curriculum of any an English department. Walt Whitman is the only other American poet who can be compared to him in terms of command of the language and force of conviction.
