Shipbuilding began on Cockatoo Island in the 1850s and continued for over a century. Thousands of employees worked to build warships, remodel passenger liners, perform general ship repairs and later to modernise submarines. Indded Oberon submarines dominated the dockyard until its closure in 1991.
