The centerpiece of the program is a large (13-song) cycle by Lili Boulanger, Clairières dans le ciel (Clearings in the Sky), whose text by Francis Jammes the composer imbues with a unique structure. The poems consist of a protagonist's fragmentary recollections of a love affair that the listener gradually realizes has ended. Then, in the extraordinary final song, Demain fera un an (Tomorrow Will Be One Year), the emotional impact bursts through as Boulanger quotes earlier songs from the cycle as if to represent a coming-to-terms with what has happened.
