Herman Wouk probably used some of his own life to write this novel of a young Jewish boy growing up in the Bronx in the mid 1920's. Imagine Tom Sawyer updated ( and a far less obnoxious boy - Herbie is very likable). And even though I grew up in the late 1950's, there are still elements in this book that evokes memories of my own childhood.
It is a very charming story, quite unlike Wouk's more famous "The Winds of War", War & Remembrance", and "The Caine Mutiny". But what is present is Wouk's ability to weave a great story, and bring his characters to life, and really make you wish you knew them.
