Cinema is the first full-length release for New York-based quartet Speedball Baby, culling several tracks from previous EP offerings. It's an odd record from start to finish. "Suicide Girl" and the title track feature some ghostly twang guitar from Matt Verta-Ray, and the latter turns its title into a whooping war cry. The Texas guitar boogie "Black Eyed-Girl" (with the declaration "I want to live, but I can't walk straight") and the surprisingly effective noise-dirge "Skull Poppin', Skin Tastin', Love Wastin' Son of a Bitch" work best. Most of Cinema is pretty hard to ignore, though, save for the overly goofy throwaway "Toss My Salad."
