Excerpt: ...This is now a scantily-populated parish, but it was formerly of sufficient importance to be used as an assize town, the last assize being held there in 1638. The vicar, the Rev. T. P. Williamson, tells me that the Parish Register, which dates from the accession of Elizabeth, contains the names of forty-two criminals executed there between 1561 and 1620. Another casual note I mast add. Mrs Buchanan Riddell has told me that in Kent it was the custom, forty or fifty years ago, perhaps later, for all the family who had attended a funeral to communicate at the next celebration in church; even persons who never communicated at any other time would not omit it. This was when there were usually monthly celebrations. I may close this chapter by recording a saying which was formerly a favourite one in Hull, and probably in other places: --" Happy is the bride the sun shines on, and blessed is the corpse the rain falls on." CHAPTER VII PENANCE Following the sequence of services in the PrayerBook, we now come to the Commination Office appointed to be used on Ash Wednesday, which opens with the following words: --"Brethren, in the primitive Church there was a godly discipline that at the beginning of Lent such people as stood convicted of notorious sin were put to open penance, and punished in this world, that their souls might be saved in the day of the Lord, and that others, admonished by their example, might be the more afraid to offend."
