When one seeks an explanation for this circumstance, that a district of so limited area and mountains of such relatively low elevation have received an apparently disproportionate amount of literary attention, one may find it, in part at least, as pointed out by the author of an article printed now nearly twenty-five years ago, in the fact that these mountains are the only considerable group worthy of the name of mountains in the northeastern United States and that they are, with the exception of the until recently almost unknown and comparatively inaccessible Southern Appalachians of North Carolina, the only highlands of scenic consequence in the eastern part of the country.
