Seller's Description:
319p. A hardcover leatherbound book in good condition. Covers worn and edges rubbed; some small bits of leather beginning to peel away. The spine has a crackled appearance, and the title plate is difficult to read. The front endpaper is cracked along the hinge, but all pages remain attached. The front endpaper has a few notes and a former owner name in pencil, and the rear free endpaper is loose. The pages are somewhat delicate from age, so that there are chips along the margins of the first and last few pages. Tanning and moderate foxing throughout. All text remains readable and the binding is secure enough for normal handling. Howes W601, Field 1690, Ayer 338, Sabin 104928. The table of contents was printed later and inserted in some copies. From Field's "An Essay Towards an Indian Bibliography" of 1873: "Of this scarce book, very few copies are complete or in good condition. Having been issued in a remote corner of Northwestern Virginia, and designed principally for a local circulation, almost every copy was read by a country fire-side until scarcely legible. Most of the copies lack the table of contents. The author took much pains to be authentic, and his chronicles are considered by Western antiquarians, to form the best collection of frontier life and Indian warfare, that has been printed."
