In addition to running the candy store located on the lower level of her inner-city tenement building, kindly Mrs. Mutterance (Katherine Helmond) is also struggling to make ends meet and raise her adopted children (Kimble Joyner and Melissa Joan Hart) despite the constant interference of her mean-spirited landlord Mr. Snyder (Sid Caesar). As Christmas draws near and Mrs. Mutterance is informed by Mr. Snyder that she and her two small children are being evicted to make room for an incoming Laundromat, the devastated adoptive mother does her best to keep her children's spirits up despite their grim outlook.
