Seller's Description:
12mo. Red cloth, dust jacket. 160pp. Near fine/very good. Slightest bit of jacket edgewear. A tight and handsome first edition, inscribed and signed by the author in blue ballpoint on the front flyleaf: "With my kindest / wishes and my / prayer for you / + L.J. Card. Suenens." Suenens (1904-96), the archbishop of Malines-Brussels, was a behind-the-scenes leader at the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) and a controversial progressive reformer within the Church. This was quite likely the personal copy of JERALD C. BRAUER (1921-99), theologian, dean of the University of Chicago's Divinity School (1960-70) and co-editor of "Church History" magazine (1963-98)--for laid into the Suenens volume is an original carbon copy typescript titled "JCB INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT FOR SUENENS CRITERION, " 4pp, 8½" X 11" (rectos only), n.p., n.y. [1964]. Very good. Stapled at upper left; minor age toning; mild original folds (not weakened). Presumably a retained draft of Brauer's "Editorial" for "Criterion" magazine (1964, Volume 3, Number 3) discussing Suenens and the Hiram W. Thomas Lecture given by Suenens at the Divinity School on May 4-5, 1964. This was the personal copy of noted Chicago photographer Archie Lieberman (1926-2008) of "Farm Boy" fame--who provided the photographs for Brauer's 1966 book "The Future of Religions"--hence Brauer probably presented Lieberman with his copy of the Suenens book and this typescript of his essay. Most unusual--an uncommon autograph and an interesting association copy.
