We now approach a difficulty which admits the same solution, to a very limited extent--Discipline. It is a lamentable feature of Modern Christianity, that the union among Christians, declared by our Lord to be a requisite for the success of His Gospel, is wounded most deeply by the contentions of His disciples, as to the mode in which that Gospel is to be promulgated. The passions of men make the casket more precious than the jewel. Christians unite in the prayer, "Thy Kingdom come;" they exert their energies, give of their wealth, and sacrifice their time for the advancement of the Redeemer's Glory; and yet weaken these efforts, and submit to be shorn of their strength, for the sake of comparative trifles. Now if Christians were truly and earnestly solicitous for the conversion of the world, could this state of anarchy continue? One of two conclusions must be certain; either the prayer of Jesus, and His repeated exhortations to union among His disciples, are realized in our present disorganized state--this we presume none will pretend to assert; or the real power of Christianity is sadly in abeyance. The nature of our dissensions suggests the thoughts, that the avowedly ungodly are not alone in the attempts to hide their sins, under the veil of companionship in transgression, and that the corruption consequent on evil communications reaches the Church of God itself. Brethren, the violation of the law of love betokens a faulty Christianity. To content ourselves with a religion of partizanship, is not to verify the life of Jesus in the soul.
