This book gives a good overview of the concept and practice of socialism in Christian history (and even pre-Christian Jewish history). It covers different developments in Europe and the United States as part of a comprehensive survey of efforts to get around the excesses/injustice of capitalism (as regulated inadequately) and/or state/oligarchic control of economies.
I highly recommend it in today's world, where our good old USA is rapidly becoming an oligarchy.
