Excerpt from Christ the Light of the World: A Sermon Preached at the Consecration of St. John's Chapel, Hobart College, October 29, 1863 The subject of extinguishing the debt Of the College, and enlarging its endowment, in order to increase the corps of professors, engaged the attention of the Board Of Trustees at its annual meeting in June, 1858, and a committee was ap pointed to devise measures for the attainment Of these objects. Owing, however, to the state of the country, and to other temporary hinderances, nothing had been accomplished before the meeting of the Board at the time Of the Medical Com mencement in January, 1860. A new committee was then appointed, which promptly took the matter in hand, and pro ceeded to arrange its plans. The first subscription came from a member of the committee, Mr. Wvilliam B. Douglas, of Geneva, who Offered to aid the general effort by erecting, at his own cost, a suitable Chapel for the use of the College. Another member of the committee, Mr. John H. Swift, of New York, subscribed an endowment for a Chaplaincy. The views of the committee in regard to the place which the reli gious element should occupy in a liberal education, are very clearly set forth in a Statement which they published in March, 1860, an extract from which is given below. The Objects aimed at by the gentlemen to whom the College is indebted for so great an increase of its means Of religious training and power of sacred impression, are more particularly designated in the Statutes for the government Of the Chaplaincy, framed by them and accepted by the Board Of Trustees. The extract from these statutes which is given below will sufficiently in dicate these Objects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
