He trained in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic, where he conducted the first systematic study of niacin to control cholesterol and introduced it to the medical world (1955-1956), practiced medicine and continued niacin research in Madison, WI (1956-1973), then went on to practice medicine in Scottsdale, AZ for more than 20 years. He is the author of many medical articles, including chapters in three books.
