I expected more somehow. For me this is a "pretty" book. Not bad, but only marginal to what it could have been. The forward and acknowledgments are wasted pages. The photos are fine as is most of the copy. I have some difference of thought as to some descriptions, such as "Foo Dogs", but most is OK although lacking strength. I have a tendency to jump hard into new stuff of interest and for me this didn't go far enough. The chapter on Recognizing Chinese Antiques didn't show joinery. The advice to buy from a reputable dealer, and turn furniture over, while good advice is a cop out. Some comparisons and photos between legitimate and fake would have been nice. Today China severely restricts historical pieces from leaving the country so all the more reason to know what constitutes an antique. My desire is to know what is what before I trust any dealer, reputable or other. I want to feel confident in basic knowledge before trusting anyone else. Then and only then can they teach the fine details. This book helps, but for me, is too fluffy, and lacking in details of what to notice. I want more--perhaps a companion volume?
