The board is like the usual Chess-board, only with two rows of squares added to each of the four sides, and consists of one hundred and twenty-eight squares. The two players opposite each other are partners, and play together against the two others. The Queens are all placed on white squares, and the Kings on black squares. In this manner the Kings are opposite each other on the diagonal lines. The move is from left to right. The Pawns are placed in front of the Pieces, and the Pawns at the corners cannot take each other until they have made a move; but should any other Pawn than those originally on the corner squares, or any Piece, come on to any of the corner squares, they are liable to be taken by the Pawn of their enemy if he is on the ad jacent square. If a corner Pawn of a player moves two squares, either of the adjacent Pawns of his adversary could take him, as he would have left his original square. The Pawns advance in a straight line and take diagonally, as in the usual Chess, and can move two squares at the first move. Therefore the King's Book's Pawn of Eed could not take the King's Book's Pawn of White, nor could the Queen's Book's Pawn of Bed take the Queen's Book's Pawn of Yellow, until the King's Book's Pawn of White had moved, or the Queen's Book's Pawn of Yellow had moved, &c. The Book's Pawns cannot be taken by the adjacent Pawns till they have been moved. This does not prevent a Book's Pawn being taken by any of the adversaries' Pieces.
