On the other hand, unite the wash waters, evaporate them to dryness, and take the weight of the residue, which indicates, in the form of a chloride salt, the quantity of alkali contained by the soap. The difference between the two weights, subtracted from that of the soap employed, expresses the quantity of water. The marbled soap, well prepared, should give by analysis, per 100 parts, six of soda, (expressed by ten parts of chloride salt--as obtained in that state by evaporation, ) sixty-four parts fatty acid, and thirty parts water. The white soap must yield 4.6 of soda, or in the form of chloride 7.5 parts; fatty acids 50.12 parts; water 45.2 parts. By comparing the results obtained, with the above, it will be easy to determine the fraud. The first method, however, being the most simple, practicable and expeditious, is much the most preferable for general use in the arts and commerce. To estimate the amount of foreign matter, after having weighed ten grammes of the soap, previously reduced to thin shavings, treat them with boiling alcohol. If the soap be white and without admixture, the portion remaining undissolved is very minute, and a mottled soap of good quality does not leave, when operating on ten grammes, more than ten centigrammes, or about one per cent. If, however, there should be a sensible amount of residue from white soap, or more than one per cent. from mottled soap, some accidental or fraudulent admixture may be suspected. The exact amount of this undissolved matter must be ascertained by weighing it. To determine the nature of the materials composing this residue, it must be then treated with cold w..
