Terry Jones book (now in its second revised edition) provides evidence to support the idea that far from being an idealistic portrait of a godly and chivalrous knight, the Knight is in fact a satirical portrait of an unscrupulous mediaeval mercenary. Jones provides much interesting background information on mediaeval warfare and attitudes to chivalry in the C14, and regardless of whether one supports his interpretation his work is highly thought-provoking.
