Excerpt from Charles Pettigrew, First Bishop-Elect of the North Carolina Episcopal Church As soon as he received the news of his appointment, Pettigrew resigned his position in Bute County and moved to Edenton. In the spring of 1775 he sailed for London where he was duly ordained deacon and priest by the bishops of London and Rochester.
