Excerpt from Chapins Who Served in the French and Indian Wars, 1754-60; The Revolutionary War, 1775-83; The War of 1812-15, and Others Rev. D. D. Chapin of Allegan, Mich, reports an interview had with a well educated Swiss physician, who said he formerly lived in France, and at one time was much interested in philo logical studies, especially the history Of names, and the name Chapin was one which he had OC Casion to study up, and says: He affirmed that it is one of the Oldest and best names in France, dating from the Carlovingian era, going back at least to the tenth century, perhaps earlier. He gives this story of its probable origin. In some feudal scrimmage of the middle ages, one who had distinguished himself in the me'lc'e had got a sword cut across his head, laying open his helmet or head-piece. For his exploit he was knighted on the spot and dubbed Capz'natus, which means decorated with a hat, and his coat-of-arms was made a hat with a Slash in it, thence the name Capinatus, the participle of the law-latin capino - and then by the softening process Of the French made Capin - Cfiapz'n. Of course the root is caput, whence cap and chapeau.' AS authority for his statements the Swiss physician named a French work, by Dr. Finaud, Histoire de la litterature Francaise.
