Policymakers in most countries are promoting the movement of health-care services from the secondary to the primary health-care sector. But there has been little practical guidance on how this might be achieved at the local level--on how needs should be identified and targeted, practice organisations adjusted, or professional expertise developed. To be successful in practice, such shifts in policy need considerable investment: in helping practitioners to upgrade their practice, in establishing new management procedures, and in sustaining professional expertise with up-to-date education and training. This book identifies the obstacles of regenerating an area of substantial deprivation and sets them within the wider context of all primary health-care development. Changing Primary Health Care draws upon the experience gained by Teamcare Valleys, a three-year, #3 million project supporting the development of primary health-care in South Wales in the early 1990s. The book is edited by Rosamond Bryar and Bill Bytheway, both members of the Editorial Board of Health and Social Care in the Community . The book is also supported by contributions from experts in community psychiatry, district and practice nursing, general practice, health visiting, midwifery, practice management and health promotion.
