During a dark week in 1927, a man is killed under strange circumstances and his body appears in an alley in Paris. The discovery poses a chilling mystery: in addition to the odd color of the victim's skin, on his neck is a wound that cannot be attributed to any known weapon or predator. The case is assigned to the Night Brigade, a division of the French police specialized in impossible-to-solve crimes. Among the detectives is young Pierre Le Noir, who has a curious network of informants in the neighborhood, through which he meets a beautiful woman with dark motives for her interest in the body. After meeting her, he understands that the case involves magic and hypnosis, illegal immigrants and respectable millionaires.
