It is one of the earliest extant sales catalogues from any Southern state and one of the few pre-civil War catalogues of the South. It is similarly one of the earliest and most remarkable listings of Oriental texts by an American student. It has for these reasons considerable historic interest, but it has additional interest as the representation of the personality of a scholarly collector.
