The blade, now in the hilt, has been cut down from its original proportions, which is apparent by the design being incomplete at the edges. It would be difficult to say for what purpose and when the blade was originally made. Certainly the date, 1509, at the end of the garter motto cannot be the period of its manufacture, as on the reverse face horsemen in the costume of about 1640 are introduced, also trophies of 17th century arms. The drawing of the whole is thoroughly Rubenesque and has been executed from the design of a Flemish artist of about 1640-50. Marcel Reymond, in " La Sculpture Florentine," under the heading of Doriatellp, in describing the Turin sword, states that it is signed in full with the artist's name, and from the character of the decoration must have been made at a late period in the life of the artist. 671. The grip overlaid with plaques of ivory, pierced with four circular holes containing brass tracery; down either side is a narrow band of brass, stamped with the inscription--, AVXILIVM ' A ' SVPER1S (help From Celestials (i.e., From Above).)
