Castles in the Fog is the second addition to the Alladale series. This novel takes place inside the real-life nature reserve of Paul Lister, a famous conservationist in the Scottish Highlands. Mixed with this beautiful place is a fascinating journey into the horrible dilemma of mental illness: After the death of Thomas Reid, his widow, Caroline, sells the beloved lodge that she and her husband started, and she flees back to Charleston, SC. Malcolm Dargie and his fiance, Molly, hope to complete their best friends' dream. They finish the remaining work soon after the wedding at their new home, which most villagers in the small town attended. But a terrible secret quickly surfaces. Molly suffers from a severe psychiatric disorder. Fortunately, Malcolm is determined to stand by her, but her behavior becomes more difficult for him to overlook. When a friend discovers that the murderer of Thomas Reid may still be alive and threatens the new owners of Alladale, Malcolm's ability to withstand the mounting stress takes a serious toll on their relationship. His reaction drives Molly into a deep state of psychosis. The strange events that haunt the young Molly are fascinating. This story is an excellent read for the "whodunits" and those who enjoy psychological thrillers. The events that portray mental illness pain are raw and may trigger emotional pain from some readers.
