This book by Stephen Harper, (no, not the Canadian Prime Minister), tells the true story of the capture of submarine U-559 by HMS Petard in the Mediterranean. It was an untold story for four decades. It was a top-secret mission so its' heroes could not be recognized at the time. Three crewmen were lost during that night mission. They were posthumously awarded the George Cross, the highest civilian award for bravery, in order not to draw unwanted attention from the German Intelligence. This successful mission allowed the codebreakers at Bletchley Park to crack the new secret German codes. This is part of the true basis of the movie, U-571, which is my favourite movie. Of course, in the movie, they credit the Americans with the successful mission. Because of the outcry by the Brits, they added a post-script to the movie, recognizing the crew of HMS Petard for their bravery and significant contribution to the war. Overall, a good contribution to a small, but important aspect of the Battle of the Atlantic. It's interesting to note that Gross-Admiral Doenitz never believed Enigma had been compromised, even on his deathbed.
