John Benton comes up with some inventive names for his characters, although sometimes the aliases they invent for themselves are a bit more creative than their actual names...but then I haven't read his entire oeuvre. But "Candi Gubar"? Mmmmm! Happy Halloween! (Apologies to anyone who actually does bear the probably-proud surname of Gubar.)
So, who is Candi Gubar? A young woman, late teens maybe, living and working with Kathy Aitken, who is "35 and has been on drugs since age 15." They take drugs and they sell drugs. As the story opens, they think their apartment is being watched and that they're about to get busted big-time--what to do with the big-time stash they've got at the moment? Candi can't believe what Kathy comes up with, let alone how it turns out. Something has to change, and quickly--but to what? What if Team Aitken-Gubar has to part ways? Maybe if Candi got the opportunity to go to Princeton...but working with a guy called Derek Princeton could work out just as well, or better...right?
