Excerpt from Canada as It Is Snows, he is made aware he has said something which is not appreciated. Should he unfortunately allude to the long winter, the difficulty of keep ing warm, and seek information about fur overcoats, he will be more or less politely told he is one of those ignorant Englishmen who help in libelling Canada by suggesting it is a region swathed most of the year in snow. Winter is a touchy topic with the Canadian. He never talks about it himself. He will tell you about the peaches grown in Ontario he will become rather pink with enthusiasm describing the wheat region Of the West; he will provide you with a bag of pamphlets on where to get the best fishing and best shooting, and he will remark, with a twinkle in his eye, that it must be rather uncomfortable living in the English rains. Like his neighbour in the States, he thinks it good sport to bait the visiting Englishman on the awfulness of the climate at home, where it is foggy when it isn't drizzling. You smile; but that is only proof he is correct. I am no apologist for the English climate. But in my life I have never known such rain, such clamminess, such a cold, Shivering summer as prevailed when I Visited the eastern provinces of the Dominion.
