B., (High Commissioner for Canada), At the Meeting of the Tyneside Geographical Society, at Newcastle-on-Tyne, on November 21st, 1895 The intrepid French navigator, Jacques Cartier, first entered the Gulf of the mighty St. Lawrence, and landed at the port of Brest, on the Labrador coast. On the lst day of July, 1534. Three days later he again landed at Gaspe, in the neighbourhood of the Miramichi River, planted the cross, and took formal possession of the country in the name of the King of France.
