Edward Speelman's endowment of the Fellowship in 1971 has crucially supplemented Cambridge's tradition of distinguished scholarship in the field. It also complements the important holdings of Dutch and Flemish works in the Fitzwilliam Museum and in Cambridge Colleges, a range of which are discussed in this volume. The eminent historian of Early Modern Art, Professor Jean Michel Massing of King's College, who has advised on the selection of Speelman Fellows for nearly forty years, also contributes an essay here.
