Henry Roth apparently had one great book in him and this is it. Not all slum kids were tough guys. Some were sensitive and introspective. There are two themes in this novel. First.a magnificent description of life on the New York's Lower East Side. Second, the story of a sad little boy his loving protective mother and his violent authoritarian father. All of this is set in a context of Jewish tradition confronting the alien American culture. Roth's book is deeply rooted in personal experience and writing it must have been at once cathartic and extremely painful. Highly recommended.
