Fair. 224pp.; lacking frontis; 8vo; blind-stamped brown blue cloth, lettered and illustrated in gilt. Six plates with tissue guards of the forty-seven called for in text [Kurutz 398d]. Spine & extremites faded with wear spine ends, some loss at spine top; corners bumped; bookplate of Louis S. Tiemann front pastedown; faint ownership signature front endpaper in pencil; moderate soil to pastedowns and endpapers of yellow coated stock; pronounced foxing / tanning to title page, and following Note to the Reader page, otherwise most text pages clean with scattered light to moderate foxing; plates with light to moderate foxing, most at extremities of image, with a bit more foxing to the backs of the plates; leading lower corner tip torn out page 95. Binding solid. "Drawing on his personal experience, Letts produced one of the best accounts of gambling, violence, and life in the mines" [Kurutz]. New York artist George V. Cooper travelled with Letts and drew the illustrations. First edition was 1852, Cowan II, page 390 states that in the 1853 edition the actual number of plates varies.
