Byzantium is one of twenty-one volumes from the Time-Life book series Great Ages of Man. Published in the 1960s, this series is an overview of the major events and eras of world history. This volume is a panorama of the various facets of the Byzantine Empire between 330 AD (the establishment of Constantinople as the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire) and 1453 (the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks). Topics covered include the founding of the Eastern Roman Empire; Emperor Constantine and his espousal of and conversion to Christianity; the movement of the Roman Empire's capital from Rome to Constantinople in 330 AD; the construction of Constatine's city and its various features (such as the Hagia Sophia); the accomplishments of Emperors/Empresses Justinian, Basil II, Theodora, Zoe and Irene; the organization of the Byzantine government and its army; iconoclasm; spiritual life; monasticism; daily life and amusements (musicians, public baths, theaters, chariot racing); the role of women; guilds; commercial life and currency (the bezant); education; art; mosaics; literature; architecture; the internal and external factors that led to the end of Byzantium; and fall of Constantinople in 1453. We also learn about the legacy of the Byzantine Empire; the cultural lineage of the Balkans and Russia can be traced to Byzantium; other legacies include the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Cyrillic alphabet, art (mosaics), and architecture. Numerous maps, illustrations, and photographs supplement and enhance the narrative. An index, timeline, and bibliography are included. In sum, author Philip Sherrard has written a concise, informative, and highly readable book about an often-overlooked topic in world history. Moreover, if you are a world history teacher (as I am) and you need to read a one-volume overview of the Byzantine Empire, this book will serve you well.
