The Story of Our National Anthem
By the Dawn's Early Light: The Story of The Star-Spangled Banner is an excellent account of the writing of the national anthem of the United States during the War of 1812. We learn about how Francis Scott Key sought the release of an American prisoner of war on a British ship in September 1814. Key was held captive against his will on a British vessel as the accompanying fleet attempted to bombard Fort McHenry (near Baltimore, Maryland) into submission; a large American flag flew all night in defiance of British guns and inspired Key to write The Star-Spangled Banner. Maps, a bibliography, and numerous illustrations are included in this wonderful book about an important event in American history.
