Unexpected romance, abusive relationships, and confusion about oneself are all key factors that play a part in Burned. In the book, Pattyn, a quiet and innocent Mormon girl, struggles to find acceptance in her crazy and abusive family. Her father, who is an abusive alcoholic, sends Pattyn away to live with her aunt for the summer. At first she dreads it and does not want to go. But surprisingly finds true love and acceptance. However, her fairytale soon comes to an end when she has to return back to her hell of a home in the spring. The old Pattyn would have had no problem adjusting back to the old ways of silently obeying; the new Pattyn, however, rebels.
Just like Pattyn, Ellen Hopkin?s birth father did not pay any attention to her. Hopkins and Pattyn both share the struggle of growing up without a fatherly figure in their life. Hopkins also was in an abusive relationship that lasted longer than it should have. Her relationship and her father inspired her to write the book Burned.
Overall, Burned is an amazing book that takes you to a whole new world. A world where no one cares and one must vent for themselves in order to survive; A world where one feels lost, confused, and alone with no one to reach out to; But also a world where true love and hope exist. Although my life is not nearly as difficult as Pattyn?s, I related to her confusion and struggles of growing up. I highly recommend this book to young adults who need inspiration and strength. It is very easy to read and has many suspenseful and unexpected twist that all readers will love.
