My background and motivation for this book I moved to Georgetown in the summer of 1968 and lived on P Street just west of Wisconsin Avenue, diagonally across from the Savile Book Shop. Back in 1851 that would have been on 5th Street just west of High Street. My two housemates, then serving in the US Army, went to Viet Nam a couple of months after I moved in. The rent was more than I could afford for a single occupant - so I moved to the suburbs of Northern Virginia, where I worked. They returned safely from their time in Viet Nam and we are still in touch and friends 50 some years later. In 1970 I married Kathleen M., from back home in New Jersey, and we moved into The Commons Apartments in McLean, VA, near Tyson's Corner. By 1972 we moved into the city and lived in Glover Park and we were members of Georgetown's Holy Trinity Church - which I had joined back in 1968. Fifty years later I still live in the city and enjoy walking to and around Georgetown. In April 2016 my wife, Kathy, succumbed to cancer and at that point the parish cemetery, Holy Rood, was not accepting burials but plans were under development to add a columbarium to the cemetery. The columbarium was dedicated on November 2, 2019. On June 6, 2020 - our 50th Wedding Anniversary, Kathy's cremains were interred at Holy Rood's new columbarium, one of the first dozen or so internments. When I started researching this book I did not plan on or even think about our family ending up in one of the cemeteries in this book. Since I purchased a double niche in the columbarium, I know where my cremains will be - with Kathy's forever.
