DESCRIPTION-A Romanian novel, of a Party worker dismissed from his job and living with cemetery bodywashers. This novel, which examines the Established left-the working class in power-caused violent debate on publication in Romania when first published in 1973. Georgie, an earnest young Romanian, expelled from the Party, dismissed from his job, is forced to take work as a clerk in a Jewish cemetery. There, befriended by four bodywashers and initiated into an understanding of death, he begins to accept the loss of his particular Paradise. There too he meets Florentza, a painter, who speaks in Party slogans and retains her awesome dignity even in bed. Blirial of the Vine is a chronicle of their strange affair, which culminates in a bacchanalian weekend with her painter husband, the current Party darling, and another lover. It also charts Georgie's progress through a society in gestation —from Party cell to the lassitude of an old vineyard, from sexual frenzy to insane murder. The novel examines too the Established Left, the working class in power — praetorian but unrelaxed — the new uneasy pomp of offcialdom. The violent debate that followed its publication in Romania confirms how sensitive the subject still is; and the novel will perhaps serve too as a valuable point of reference for Western socialists. inventory #6162.
