Flowers that can stand the heat
I absolutely loved this book. It lists plants both native and non-native that will actually survive the heat and subsequent dryness, and thrive in the longer growing seasons, of the south.
Starting with a brief history of Southern horticulture (that's pretty much from the Mason Dixon Line South), this experienced (Public Television's "Victory Garden") horticulturist gives concrete information on what will and won't work.
Each recommended plant includes optimal zone and heat zone numbers.
I was delighted to find some local nurseries listed by name and location (these were in Florida but there are others from other Southern States) with their recommended lists too.
It's easy to read, logical and I believe it's information you can trust.
Most plants that he recommends are also pictured.
