This illustrated manual is intended to show ship modellers, whatever their skills and interests, how to build a whole range of warships of the iron and steel eras. As well as covering a wide variety of vessels it also deals with every category of model, from static miniatures through to large-scale working models. The book is divided into ten chapters, each of which has been written by a recognised expert in the field; and each chapter deals with the particular problems associated with specific warships and certain model types. For instance, in his chapter on miniature models, Philip Baggeley addresses the difficulties associated with delicate detailing at a very small scale and also discusses, more broadly, the purposes of miniature modelling. In a chapter on late Victorian battleships, Eric Dyke analyses the technological developments which took place over a very short period and explains how the modeller needs to have a strong grasp of those changes, particularly in relation to armament. The chapter on kit-built models, by Loren Perry, explains how kits can be used as the basis for conversion to more advanced models.
