Their intelligence and courage are tested to the limit when tragedy occurs and they return home to find the aftermath of a bloody coup. Their father suffered personal setbacks, and allowed sedition to spread among old enemies. Those enemies now seek the brothers with outside magical help, and Brannek and Lorek are forced to flee for their lives, unable to trust anyone, while their sister goes into hiding. Worst of all, Lorek now bears the weight of a terrible curse. The two fall in with a caravan group out of desperation.
