Brother Rabbit is the story of one young man's experiences during the early years of the First Crusade. Brother Rabbit studies medicine at the cathedral school of Mainz in 1095. When Pope Urban II in November of that year calls for warriors to assist the Christian Greek Empire in the East, all of Europe answers, commoner, nobleman and prince. One among them, Emicho, the Black Lord of Leisingen, brings the Holy War into Mainz. Through an unfortunate series of events, the young clerical student is thrust into the crusade movement, unknowingly and unwillingly, a part of Emicho's armed pilgrimage. After Emicho's army is defeated and dispersed on the Hungarian border, Brother Rabbit is abandoned, forgotten and alone, far from the lands he knows. How will a lone clerical student survive in a hostile land with no means to protect himself? Should he travel on to Constantinople, into the unknown, or try to return to the destruction of all that he knew?
