Excerpt from British Foreign Missions: 1837 1897 The aim of this book, as indicated by its title, British Foreign Minions, 1837 - 1897, is to give a brief account Of the growth and progress of British Foreign Missions during those Sixty years of Her Majesty's reign. The Introductory chapter gives a Short account of British missions up to the year 1837. Chapters I I. And III. Set forth the advance of these missions in the East, Africa, America, and the Pacific Islands. The next five chapters, IV. V. VI. VII. And VIII. Describe the special developments which have been made, viz. Education, Medical Missions, Woman's Work, Literature, and Native Churches. The last chapter, IX., sums up the present position. In the Appendix statistics of the leading societies will be found, which the authors have endeavoured to record as accurately as possible. The subject of the book excluded the large and important work done by societies belonging to the continent of Europe and the United States of America; but the incidental references made to some of them may indicate the vast services ren dered by such societies. If their operations were fully described they would be found at least to equal, if not to surpass, those that are recorded here. Missions to the Jews also did not appear to come within the purpose set before the authors. Lack of space has prevented the description of the many individual and personal missions which British subjects are carrying on in various parts of the field.
