Ginny Hawker and Kay Justice are long-time practicioners of Appalachian old-time music. They're particularly well-versed in the music of the legendary Carter Family. Bristol is a collection of 15 songs, all of which are generally associated with The Carters. Five of the tunes were written by A.P. Carter; the rest are all songs fans of The Carters will recognize as part of the family' s repertoire. Hawker and Justice sing like coal-country angels and are especially effective as a duet. Their voices intertwine in patterns as old as the material they're performing. The high point of the CD is their performance of "On The Rock Where Moses Stood." Justice sings the lead here. Hawker's voice flies to join Justice on the chorus and together they weave a bit of mountain magic that is utterly beautiful in it's simplicity and effect. Tracy Schwarz picks an elegant guitar in accompanying Justice and Hawker on this number. A.P., Sara and Maybelle Carter can rest peacefully knowing that their music is in the care of musicians like Ginny Hawker and Kay Justice. ~ Philip Van Vleck, Rovi
