The Author's Preface reads, "Do not read this book before eating, nor in the midst of a sleepless night. For it is a revolting book, filled with disgusting details of a loathsome disease. And unfortunately, all the details are true." After reading this I skimmed through this book, and it is extremely descriptive of what seems more like mortal and physical torture, of course it is inflicted upon human beings through disease. Too depressing for me, and even more shocking was when I discovered the plague returned several times afterwards. I cannot imagine the shock ,apprehension and panic of the population of Philadelphia with the returning plagues...
