I need not tell you about the preparations: the man was very patient and docile, and Bonifacia knelt on the floor in a corner of the room, praying. I took instructions as to how I was to hand this thing and that thing. The patient said it was quite unnecessary to bind him to a chair, he would sit quite still without, but he was quite content to let himself be tied all the same. The Doctor was quite calm, but I could see by the assistant's face that it was a bad business. The Doctor made a little cut, then I instantly handed him another instrument, and he called out: " I have the splinter! " The man wanted to jump up, he cried out: --"I can see!" But we held him down, he had to shut his eye, and I helped to tie the bandage over them. The Doctor's face beamed with pleasure; I had to take Bonifacia out of the room, she cried so loud; when I came back into the room the Doctor gave me the tiny splinter of stone in a piece of paper, and said: --" Keep that in remembrance of the first time you assisted at an operation. I hope you will continue to do so; you have a steady and sure hand." It was all I could do not to shout for joy--what! I might help in curing the suffering--I? Bonifacia begged me to give her the splinter; Ronymus must have it set in gold and fastened to a ring; so I gave her the splinter, for I was sure the Doctor would think it right. In the house and all through the village it was one great rejoicing among the sufferers over the wonderful cure of the road-mender; Bonifacia was ready to tell it to any one who wanted to hear. They staid with us three days; the Doctor taught me how to put on and take off bandages; and when he said I did it well--if God himself...
