Briar gets his day
Well, I zipped through this book in a day. I attribute this to Tamora Pierce's easy, flowing style, as well as the fact that the writing in this book seems to have tightened considerably since the previous installment. In "Briar's Book," Briar Moss and his teacher Rosethorn find themselves under quarantine after visiting the city's slums to give free medical aid and treatment; something much worse than winter colds has arisen from the city's sewers. I am so very glad that someone like Pierce is writing for the YA audience; she doesn't talk down to her readers, many of whom may be as young as 8 or 9 years old (as I was when my mom picked out "Alanna: The First Adventure" for me from the library). This quality is what has kept me reading her into adulthood. The Circle series may be strung along simpler lines than her Tortall sagas, but I imagine that is because the latter has been with her so much longer, and has taken on layers of its own in the past 25 years. The universe here is akin to a seedling, much like one of Briar's beloved vines. This first series of four books focuses on strength of character and the bonds of friendship, and is well worth a read.
