En 1914, le jeune Longhi n'a pas vingt-cinq ans, mais deja une plume alerte et des ambitions affirmees: le voici qui ecrit pour ses eleves du lycee une Breve mais veridique histoire de la peinture italienne , enoncant les principes formels de l'art italien et etudiant son developpement depuis les mosaiques byzantines jusqu'a la Renaissance et a l'ere baroque. La premiere partie de l'ouvrage, intitulee Idees , fournit une methode nouvelle pour l'analyse du style des artistes; la seconde, Histoire , deroule une histoire de l'art italien a la lumiere de cette methodologie. Longhi se revele un maitre subversif: au classicisme de Raphael ou des Carrache, il prefere largement Piero della Francesca et Caravage, deux peintres encore peu celebres qu'il contribuera grandement a faire sortir de l'oubli. Quant a Cezanne et aux impressionnistes, ils trouvent ici leur place comme la quintessence de la peinture italienne ! Mieux qu'aucune autre synthese, ce voyage initiatique permet au lecteur de regarder des tableaux majeurs avec autant de savoir que de passion.
