REVIEW ISBN 0-37451221-3 COLETTE "BREAK of DAY" Colette does not write a 'story' - rather, she deals with emotions and reflections. She writes beautiful prose - it is obvious that she has a passion for words. One reads a few pages then contemplates before savouring the next few. She is highly perceptive - supplying great detail. The thread binding these vivid impressions is the loving memory of her mother (through the latter's letters). She herself must have been quite a special person: "Must one really give up being young?" Colette's sense of humour is refreshing: "I think I may soon give up eating the flesh of animals, but not today (Pg 37). And so her comparisons are startling and amusing: "Why not cook a child too?" (Pg 37). Although an intellectual, she writes in the language of the common man, yet with sharp awareness of everyday occurrances which she elevates to important 'moments'. Sometimes the writing is a bit confusing. As her racing mind flits from one thought-connection to the next - wanting to share so many inputs from that sharp wit. SUMMARY - in one sentence: Colette writes beautiful prose. "Break of Day" is a precious collector's item - a book that one will read and re-read to savour and to contemplate her wisdom and humour."
