The notes to this new version by pianist Joseph Moog and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie remind one that this popularity is of relatively recent vintage, but now, this work that Brahms wrenched out of himself over a period of years can be interpreted in many ways. The old-school big, dramatic, Beethovenian reading is not so common nowadays, and Moog's performance satisfies thoroughly by providing one. He gets excellent backing from conductor Nicholas Milton, who imbues the beginning of the symphony, said to represent the moment when Brahms' mentor Schumann jumped into the Rhine, with explosive tension. Moog keeps the momentum pushing forward in both the first movement and the finale, having little use (maybe too little, but it fits his concept) for pianissimo dynamics, and his slow movement is almost theatrically mysterious....
